March 14th-18th

                                     Kindergarten New- April -14th-18th

v  This week, since we have covered all of the letters of the alphabet, we will now   be working on final digraph ck.  The rule is that when the/k/ sound comes at the end of a word, and there is a short vowel before it, you use the diagraph “ck”.  Examples:  black , duck,  lock

v   Keep practicing with your child to help them write as many words as they can in ten minutes so that they will be successful on the end of the year test.

v   The wedding of Q and u went very well.  We had a lovely ceremony, and we feasted on wedding cake, ice cream, and punch.  The children had a wonderful time blowing wedding bubbles outside, and we dance at the reception.  All the parts for our wedding were randomly chosen by picking the children’s names from a hat so that it would be fair.

v  Reading-We are introducing the story Max Takes the Train.  This book was written by an author you may be familiar with --“Rosemary Wells”.  She has written and illustrated over 60 children’s books.  The genre for this book is animal fantasy and the comprehension skill is realism and fantasy.

v  Some of the science concepts that we will be covering are how to mix colors, and make-believe animals.

v  The Social studies concepts will be revolved around forms of transportation.

v   Report cards should be signed and returned as soon as possible.

In Math we are finished with Topic 10 and the test will come home to be signed and for you to get an idea of what your student has accomplished.  Please review the pages that come home in your child’s folder daily.

The children are doing a wonderful job with their kidwriting.  You might see some papers coming home that the children are doing at learning centers while I am kidwriting with another group.  All of the learning center activities revolve around things that we introduce in class, and are an extension of their learning.

We are not having an Easter party but we will have an egg hunt and my class will have to find eggs with our memory word “said” on them.  Help your child practice this at home.

Monday, April 14thth is day # 1 and we have art class.

There will be no school on Friday April 18th and the children will be back at school on Monday April 21st, due to make-up snow days.

Enjoy the warmer weather this weekend!!!!!!

For the week of March 3rd to March7th

                                           What’s happening in Kindergarten?

March3rd- March 7th

Dinosaur projects:  In case we don’t have school on Monday due to bad weather, we will do Monday’s projects on Tuesday.  All the other projects will still be on the scheduled day.

Phonics:  We will be learning the letter Vv, like the beginning of vest and valentine.  We will separate words in syllables, identifying final sounds in words, and we will be working on wordlist # 12. Remember that I will not be sending this wordlist home to practice because we will be using it for a grade for blending and I need to be certain that the children are not just memorizing the words.

Math:  We will be still be learning about subtraction by acting out story problems. Keep practicing number writing at home, especially if you see a lot of reversals.

Reading:  We will still be working on the book “Bunny Day”. We did not get as much accomplished as I wanted to on this story because of  learning about Dinosaurs,  dental health month, and Dr. Seuss  day, etc… ……….. So much to do and learn!

Science:  We will be working the unit “Wood and Paper” and the children will discover that they can change the form of wood by sanding it, also by sharpening their pencils. ” The children will be working on their own “wood and paper science journals.

We are planning our field trip for Wednesday, May 28 and we will be going to the Pioneer Tunnel in Ashland.  If you are a homeroom parent that has been active all year with the parties, and in good standing with the PTO, you are invited to attend the fieldtrip.  I had the incorrect date for the carnival, it is scheduled for May 23rd. Sorry!

*We are beginning to read a chapter book series called “The Magic Tree House” by Mary Pope Osborne.    The children really like these books.  You can usually buy them from the Scholastic book order.

Monday March 3rd will be day #1B and we will have Art class.  !

On Thursday we were delighted to have our assistant principal Mrs. Ulseskie and Mrs. Brown the Reading specialist, read a Dr. Seuss book to our class.

On Friday we had a wonderful day celebrating  Dr. Seuss Day by having some graduate students from Bloomsburg College come to do a lesson with our children(March 2nd).  They did a spectacular job and the children really enjoyed it.  We were also very fortunate to have Mrs. Groody assistant principal at the high school, and Mr. Dave Brown, former NSE teacher.

February 24th-28th

Dear Parents,

We had a yogurt tasting project for the letter “Y’ and we made a classroom graph of our favorite kind.  We had a great valentine’s celebration, and I would like to thank the homeroom parents for all the hard work they do for our class!  Your help is appreciated!  Thanks for all the wonderful gifts and cards for Valentine’s Day, I really appreciated your thoughtful ness.

The children did a great job with all of the activities for the anti-bully week, and jump rope for heart.

We are beginning something new with our wordlists.  By this time in the kindergarten year, all the children should be blending successfully with little or no assistance.  Some of the children are memorizing the words on the wordlists and not reading the words.  In order to test this accurately we will only be sending the odd numbered lists home with the children, and I will use the even numbered lists for the report card grade.  By doing this you can still see the type of words that the children will be expected to read.

On to the week of Feb. 24th to the 28th

Phonics- We will be learning the letter “d” as in duck and dog.  Show and tell will be on Friday as usual.

Reading- We will be starting the week with the story “Bunny Day”.”  The comprehension skill that will be taught throughout this lesson is “sequence”, and the genre is “animal fantasy”.

Science- We will be working on the Foss science lesson Wood and Paper”, and we will be keeping a writing journal about some of the things that we have learned.  We will also be learning about tools, machines, camouflage, and plant and animal characteristics.

Math- We will be continuing to learn about subtracting.

We will have our second oral repots revolved around dinosaurs. The “dinosaur” presentations are scheduled for Monday 3rd, 4th and 5th.  I will send a schedule with your child’s day and name of dinosaur.  I will be evaluating the children on knowing the name, a few facts, and a picture of their dinosaur.  Try practicing it at home so that it will be easier for your child to present their report to the class.  I am looking forward to watching your children shine!
