Your help is appreciated! Thanks for all the wonderful gifts and cards for valentine’s day, I really appreciated your thoughtful ness.

On to the week of Feb21st. to the25th:
Phonics- We will be learning the letter “D”, please practice the writing of lower case “d”, many children reverse it and make it look like a “b”. Some of the handwriting pages I like to do in class so I can make sure that the children are forming the letters correctly. I feel very strongly that it is useless practice if it is done incorrectly.
Reading- We will be starting the week with the classic traditional tale “Goldilocks and the three Bears”. The comprehension skill that will be taught throughout this lesson is “character”.
Science- We have been working on the Foss science lesson Wood and Paper”, and we are keeping a writing journal about some of the things that we have learned. The concentration this week will be on “paper”.
Math- We will be continuing with counting by 10’s, and using dimes to count to a dollar. We will be learning a new “ABC” pattern using pattern blocks, and we will be learning about measuring.
The “dinosaur” presentations are scheduled for Friday, February 24th. Unlike the State projects, we will all be doing our dinosaur projects on the same day. I will be evaluating the children on knowing the name, a few facts, and a picture of their dinosaur. Try practicing it at home so that it will be easier for your child to present their report to the class. I am looking forward to watching your children shine!
Don’t forget that there is no school on Friday February 17th and Monday February 20th.
Because school is closed on Monday for Presidents day, Tuesday will be Day # 2, and we will have music class.

Remember:
No matter how long the winter is, spring is sure to follow.

February 13th-17th

Kindergarten News- February 13th-February 17th
*Letter Yy and its sounds as in yarn and yellow will be our focus in Phonics next
week. All of the children should have taken their state project home. Again, good job children!
Next Week: Monday January 30th- Day # 3 in the school rotation, don’t forget library books!
Phonics:
We will be learning the letter Cc with a /K/ sound as in cat and candy. We will learn the K and C Spelling Rule. This rule is that we spell the /K/ sound with the letter k when the sound is followed by the letters e, i, and y. I have decided to send home every Friday, any worksheets that I didn’t get covered in class for you to do at home. I know it is important to parents to be able to help their child and this is one way I feel that you can help them review what we have covered in class. I do not want the worksheets to be considered homework, so they do not need to be returned.
Have a good weekend!
Mrs. Bernosky

January 16th-20th

Jan.-16th to Jan. 20th
Monday, January 16th- Teacher in-service day- No school for students.
Next week:
Reading- We will begin “Seeds” which is classified an “Informational text. Look for the day and date on the enclosed paper. We will do several projects per day so it will take more than a week to do the whole class.
I wanted to inform you that I will not be in school on Jan. 18h to Jan.20th because I will be at a conference. I wanted to let you know in case you are trying to get in touch with me and I am not responding. Mrs.Ossman will be filling in for me, and she is a very capable substitute teacher.
Report cards will be sent home on Friday the 20th of January. Please return them as soon as possible, in the envelope. I will be able to answer any report card questions on Monday Jan. 23rd.
FYI
If your child’s folder needs replacing, it is perfectly fine if you get them a new one. It can be any design or color. Thanks in advance! Enjoy the nice, long weekend!
Tuesday January 17th the bus changes will be implemented. You would have received information if you child’s bus schedule was changed.
Mrs. Bernosky

Dec. 23rd-Jan.3rd

Dear Parents,
The kindergarten children had a wonderful time at their Christmas party. Thanks homeroom parents! The reading buddies loved the gifts that they received from the kindergarten children.
We got our tickets punched by the conductor”Mrs. Potts”(who by the way really works on the train in Jim Thorpe) and she wore her train outfit and brought her real ticket punch. The children loved it!! The movie was a hit. Later we had beautiful Christmas cookies and hot chocolate at the party. Thanks to the homeroom moms for all their continued help throughout this busy time.
We traveled to the high school on Wednesday to see the band and choir perform. What a great concert.
I sincerely hope you liked the Christmas ornaments that the children made for you. Someday, and it goes fast believe me, you will look back at these keepsakes and wonder where the time went when your little one was in kindergarten. I also hope you enjoyed the reindeer food, the polar express bell, the books, and the cookie plate for Santa. We were busy elves this season!
Thank you so much for thinking of me at Christmas. The wonderful gifts were not necessary but deeply appreciated. Your children know what the “love of giving” means because they couldn’t wait for me to open their gifts.
We will return to school on January 3rd, 2012, and it will be day # 5 on the school rotation. Don’t forget sneakers!
We will be testing when we return from break because the report cards will be given out on January 20nd. Keep writing with your children over break, so that they don’t forget how to do it. They are becoming great authors. I have sent word list # 7 home for you to practice over the break.
The week we return we will be learning the letter “K” and sometime during the week the boys get to be “King for a Day”. The girls will get their chance when we do “Q” and they will be “Queen for a day”.
MERRY CHRISTMAS and A VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!
Mrs. Margaret Bernosky

Dec.19th- Dec. 23rd

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!!
Dear Parents,
I wanted to congratulate you on the behavior of your children today at the concert at the high school. They sat and listened quietly, and really enjoyed it.
Next week will be four and a half days that we will combine some school work, but also some holiday fun things too. We will not be starting the letter “K” because of the short week, and the fact that the children’s attention span is on Santa, not learning.
Monday we are lucky enough to see the PTO sponsored program “Burble, Fizz, Kaboom”.
Wednesday Dec. 21st we will go to the high school for a performance of the high school band and choir. I attended the evening performance and it was spectactular.
Dec.22nd (Thursday) we will hop aboard the “Polar Express” and feast on Christmas cookies and hot cocoa. Don’t forget the pajamas for this day. Remember no bedroom slippers on the bus, but they can be put into school bags to wear later. We will have the classroom Christmas party from 11:30-12:45 and all homeroom moms are invited to help!
Dec.23-Early Dismissal for students-NSE-11:45 . Remember there is no breakfast served on early dismissal days.
Don’t forget to put out the reindeer food on Christmas Eve. Ask the children to show you their letter from Santa. He visited our classroom on Wednesday and he wrote a letter back and hid it in our classroom on Friday.
Reminder: Show and tell is always on a Friday! Please remember that your child needs a snack everyday. Because of the unusual situation on Thursday, I didn’t get to give the “L” show and tell bags for Friday. Some of the children brought “L” items anyway and they really enjoyed showing them. Our show and tell will always be on Fridays and the items that the children bring should begin with the letter that we are working on in Phonics for that week.
Our letter for next week is “O” as in octopus. “O” is a vowel and it has a short sound like Octopus and a long sound like overalls.

In Math we will continue to work with positional words like above, below, over, under, in, out, left, and right. We will also be learning to sort objects by color, shape, size, and kind.
Reading:
We will begin the book “Fix-It-Duck” by Jez Alborough. The genre is “Animal Fantasy” and the comprehension skill is “setting”.

Activities for next week:
Tuesday, September 13th will be our class’s turn to shop at the “Book Fair”. (FYI: Money is due at the time of purchase!) We will have the opportunity to shop from 9:00 to 9:40. Try to have the books picked out that you would like your child to purchase because they have a hard time understanding about how many books they can actually buy. Please use the form that was sent home on Wednesday for this. Buying is not mandatory!!!!!! Evening buying for parents and children is 4to 7, Monday Sept, 12th.

The PTO meeting is scheduled for Monday evening at 6:30.

The Diebels test will be given on Tuesday Sept.13th. This is a test given by the Reading Department and it acts as a guide to track your child’s progress through the year.

Luau-Due to the flooding, we had to postpone the Luau until Friday, September 16, 2011 in the AM. Monday will be Day 4 on your child’s special class schedule. Please note the change on your school calendar.
